Abstract

The phylum Cnidaria is characterized by animals with stinging cells named cnidocytes in their tissues. Due to the release of stinging substances, cnidarians show few associations with other species, however the recorded associations are often described as mandatory or optional commensalism. One of the groups of this phylum, Ceriantharia, is represented by members generally known as cerianthids or tube-dwelling anemones. Although the existence of some studies on taxonomy and systematic position, the interspecific associations to ceriantharians' tubes and the methods used by species to anchor to these animals' tubes are almost unknown. In this way, the present study will create a list of species that occur in tube-dwelling anemones' tubes and will describe the anchoring methods and eating habits related to these species. Based on it, associations of several groups with some species of cerianthids will be observed. Nevertheless, the data provided by this study could be used by the biotechnology associated with biomimetics to develop sustainable structures with greater durability and lower costs of acquisition and/or systems that can be used by the nautical industry, aiding in the fixation methods in aquatic environment. In this way, the project may produce patents that ensure the protection of the material to be developed. (AU)
