Abstract

Periodontal disease (PD) is an infectious disease that affects approximately 25% of the world population. PD compromises the periodontal tissues supporting the tooth , causing loss of teeth. Besides these effects, PD may affect the health of the individuals, because it is associated with an increased risk of systemic disease. Microbial diversity studies have confirmed that some microorganisms, such as P. gingivalis and A. actinomycetemcomitans, are involved in PD while others are considered beneficial. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that probiotic microorganisms or their products are able to control periodontitis, due to antagonistic mechanisms against pathogenic microbiota or the ability to modulate the immune response. Thus, the present study will assess the direct effects of probiotic bacteria on periodontal pathogens by in vitro evaluation of bacterial interactions, biofilm formation, co-culture, virulence genes expression by periodontal pathogens and adhesion efficiency. The immunomodulatory effect of the interaction between probiotic bacteria and periodontopathogens will be evaluated by in vitro tests with macrophages and peripheral monocytes, determining the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, surface protein expression, genes transcription involved in the innate immune response and analysis of signaling pathways activation.
