| Associated to the scholarship: | 14/14248-7 - Additives, aromatic amines, nitrosamines and metals in baby bottles: analytical methodologies and study of migration, BP.DR |
Abstract Baby bottles might contain Non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) as a result of the reaction and degradation processes or the presence of impurities in the raw materials used for producing of the utensil. Plastics such as baby bottles, are not inert and can transfer these compounds into to food. However, there is a lack of data on the migration of NIAS from polypropylene, silicone, and Tritan baby bottles. In view of this, it is necessary to assess whether these materials are safe for use since over 50% of the Brazilian population uses the bottles in feeding children aged between 0 and 12 months. In this context, the aim of this study is to evaluate the migration of NIAS from baby bottles using gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry of low and high resolution. The bottles will be subjected to migration tests using 50% ethanol as milk simulant. Since the baby bottles are materials to repeated use, second and third migration tests will be performed as recommended by the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA). The information obtained will be helpful to support the regulatory agencies in relation to the use of new materials as well as in the risk assessment for consumer health. (AU) | |
