Abstract

Caring for a dependent elderly relative requires learning information, developing skills and establishing new routines. Like all processes of change, adapting to the caregiver role often creates stress, especially when the impacts on the caregiver's lifestyle are far reaching. According to theories of stress, caregivers' abilities, such as their social skills (SS), influence their effectiveness in this role. When one member of a caregiver - elderly person dyad has low social competence, it is almost inevitable that this person will neglect the needs of the other. As such, caregivers who develop their SS become better able to meet their own and others' needs, resulting in higher levels of wellbeing. However, there is a paucity of studies focussing on the SS of those who care for elderly relatives and, only recently, studies have been undertaken to develop the Social Skills Inventory for Caregivers of Elderly Family Members (IHS-CI). Although these initial studies indicate good evidence for the internal and external validity of the HIS-CI (internal reliability, exploratory factor analysis, relationship between HIS-CI scores and other variables), It is necessary to obtain and present additional evidence of validity, to enable the interpretation of an individual caregiver's abilities. The objective of this proposal is to meet the remaining requirements so that the IHS-CI can be considered suitable for use. The specific objectives are to investigate evidence of convergent and discriminative validity, verify the initial factor structure via a confirmatory factor analysis and establish norms to guide the interpretation of individual caregivers' scores.
