Abstract

Background: Abdominal obesity, high levels of blood pressure, lipid profile and fasting glucose are risk factors for the occurrence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Furthermore, low levels of physical activity, age, genetic and endocrine factors can influence the development of Metabolic Syndrome (MS). Despite the importance of longitudinal studies, in Brazil this type of research design is poorly developed. Objective: The main objective of this proposal is to take 6 years of data collection of our cohort project to be analyzed and discussed with two researchers with the highest technical expertise on the field of physical activity and health, and to elaborate two high impact papers under the direct supervision of the abroad supervisors. These papers will be part of the PhD thesis. Methods: A random sample stratified by age (50 years old) was selected among the main Basic Health Care Units (BHU) in each region (north, south, east, west and center) of the city of Bauru, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Data collection on risk factors for MS and levels of physical activity will be obtained with directed interview, physical examination and medical records analysis. This research project has been developed in five waves, from 2009 to 2017. In the first wave (2009-2010) each patient attended to its BHU of origin where it was held an interview, physical examination and review of medical records. In the second (2011-2012) and third waves (2013-2014), the interviews took place by telephone, while the data collection in medical records followed the same routine of the first phase. In the fourth (2015) and fifth (2017) waves, the same procedures of the first phase will be adopted, with face-to-face interviews and physical evaluation. Data analysis and development of two scientific papers will be done during the period abroad in collaboration with the supervisors.
