Abstract

Vitamins are widely found substances in nature, such as plants, fruits and other products. Ascorbic acid (AA) is one of these compounds and has a powerful antioxidant activity. In addition, it acts as a skin whitener, fighting free radicals and hyper-pigmentation of the skin. Another important representative compound is niacin (Vitamin B3 or niacotinamide), often used in cosmetics as a precursor of endogenous macromolecules which possess outstanding antioxidant activity, and induces collagen production and prevents premature ageing of the skin. Thus, the use of these compounds in emulsions is very common, due to the ease of use of the final product as well as the pleasant organoleptic properties. In order to overcome the skin barrier and decrease the instability of these two compounds, micro and nanostructured systems have been developed to facilitate the delivery of the active, making them available to the tissue for a longer period of time, without causing damage and/or toxicity. The objective of this work is to obtain biodegradable chitosan microparticles containing ascorbic acid and niacinbyspray drying, as well as theirphysicochemical characterization, byscanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analysis, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and andthermogravimetry/derivative thermogravimetry (TG/DTG).
