Abstract

The subject of the post-doctoral research Project is the circulation of the New Education Fellowship (NEF) in Brazil through the contact of Brazilian educators with the USA between the 1920s and 1940s. The objective is to explore the (dis)connections between the Progressive Education Association (PEA) - an American entity - and Brazil, and to comprehend the way the PEA promoted the circulation of the NEF - an international fellowship located in England - in Brazil, and in order to do that the journal Progressive Education will play the role of a guide, a parameter for the analysis. The research Project is articulated with the research that has been developed by Professor Diana Vidal (Process FAPESP 2015/06456-1), besides it gathers a series of documents surveyed during the Ph.D. research, which was recently concluded (Process FAPESP 2012/11361-1). The few references to the NEF in Brazilian historiography of education, in spite of its international projection in the first half of 20th century, reinforces the relevance of exploring the relations between Brazil and the NEF, and of understanding how the discussions promoted by the NEF circulated among Brazilian educators. The following research project has as hypothesis that one of the ways Brazilian educators got in contact with the NEF's discussions was through the USA, specifically through the PEA. Therefore, it is pertinent to question: What were the circulation processes involved and how the NEF's ideas diffused through the USA were incorporated by Brazilian educators? The methodological approach has as focus to make visible the connected histories, the continuities and connections that frequently are not noticed, facts that Serge Gruzinski and Roger Chartier call our attention to. This way, the aim is to explore the different circulation processes (of ideas/models/objects) that culminated in the diffusion of the NEF in Brazil. For a start, the sources will be the pedagogical journals from the USA (Progressive Education), England (The New Era) and Brazil (Revista do Ensino - Minas Gerais, Escola Nova - São Paulo, Boletim de Educação Pública - Rio de Janeiro, etc.).
