Abstract

Among the late eighties and early twenty-first century a large number of Brazilians emigrated to other countries. One of these countries is the United States. Since then it has been made many research on this topic. These studies investigate different aspects of Brazilian migratory context in the US. This study proposal is part of this investigative universe. Its focus is the places of religion in the second generation of young Brazilian immigrants in the United States of America. The choice of this focus takes into account two aspects that have been identified by other studies: (1) religion is a considerable identity element and the churches are important spaces of sociability between Brazilian immigrants in the US; (2) has increased the number of the second generation of young Brazilian immigrants in the US.Regarding the questions that guided this research they can be summarized as follows: Research indicates that it is very common belonging to a religion in the first generation of Brazilian immigrants in the United States. Does this also occurs in the second generation? In case of a positive response, how this belonging happens and what are the meanings, roles and places of religion among this second generation of Brazilian immigrants? A religion still retains its ethnic identity potential between them? What about the churches, they are also important spaces of sociability among members of the second generation? How the issues of transnational immigration and religious transnationalization are involved in this immigration context? (AU)
