Abstract

This project proposes the creation of an international and interdisciplinary research center, the LAPOMED - Laboratory for Archaeology and Anthropology of Middle Eastern Populations, at the University of São Paulo, which will host the Southern Global Coalition of Excellence for Middle Eastern Studies. This scientific coalition involves researchers from many Brazilian universities - USP, UNICAMP, UNESP, UNIFESP, UDESC,UFRN, UFES, UFPEL, UFRGS, MACKENZIE, PUC-RJ,- and from foreign universities - Stanford University, Chicago University (USA); University of Oxford, University College London, University of St Andrews (GBR); Munster University (DEU); University of Vienna (AUS); Leiden University (NLD); University of Helsinki (FIN); Polish Academy of Sciences (POL); Tel AvivUniversity (ISR); University of Lisbon (PRT); University of Barcelona (ESP); Center National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS-Paris (FRA); Deakin University (AUT); Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universidad Nacional del Nordeste, Universidad Nacional de La Patagonia (ARG); Dokuz Eyul University (TUR) and Lebanese University(LBN). The proposal is to disseminate and promote the archaeological and anthropological thought and practices about the Middle East, environmental studies, biodiversity and society, long-term sustainable developments, spaces and landscapes, biosociomaterial entanglements and material analyses, engaging with diverse data sets and regions from the Middle East. The aim is to address the challenges of recording and reconstructing past landscapes; understand the cultures and local populations of the region, study the long-term impact of human conflicts on the environment; the ancient imperial borders, especially between the Roman and Persian empires; address ecological systems and human-environment interactions in the ancient world; analyze resilience in ancient cultures; also examine the visual arts in the construction of the experience with the landscapes and the imaginary of the period; address the emergence and entanglements of religions, the relationship between Roman militarism and religious fanaticism; and, finally, discuss how spaces, ancient cosmopolitics and the multiple realities of the Middle East were negotiated in the past. As well as developing critical thought about how these long-term things affect us even today in Modernity. (AU)
