Abstract

Myxosporean are multicellular parasites that infect birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. To date approximately 2,400 species have been described worldwide. In Brazil, due to the great diversity of fish species, the study of these parasites is increasingly being more prominence, with focus on diversity, biology and host-parasite interaction. The Amazon basin has an extraordinary fish fauna, with species which highlight the economic importance and potential for cultivation and also for ecotourism. Among the species of economic importance in the extractive fishing and potential for cultivation, there is the Piaractus brachypomus species, popularly known as pirapitinga. In this proposal, we aim the taxonomic study of parasites of myxosporea class (myxosporean) found infecting P. brachypomus come from the natural environment of the Amazon Basin region of Santarém, PA. For taxonomic analysis, the proposal is to use traditional tools of morphological analysis using light microscopy and molecular analysis using the sequencing of the 18S gene. (AU)
