Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant neoplasm of epithelial cells that presents slow growth. In companion animals, it is the most common skin tumor in cats and the second most common in dogs. It occurs mainly in tropical regions where there is a higher incidence of ultraviolet rays, affecting animals that have alopecia and/or hypopigmented skin areas. Galectin-3, a protein expressed in the nucleus or cytoplasm of cells, has been demonstrated to be a prognostic tool in several tumors, since this lectin is related to various stages of tumor development. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the presence of Gal-3 in cutaneous SCCs in dogs and cats and investigate possible relationships of these expressions with tumor differentiation, mitosis count, and postsurgical survival. Therefore, 50 samples of canine and feline cutaneous SCC will be submitted to immunohistochemistry. The results will be compared with the histopathological grading of the lesions, the mitotic index and postsurgical survival times. (AU)
