Abstract

The behavior of sodium intake constitutes not only a response to extracellular dehydration resulting from sodium depletion, but also operates in an anticipatory and plastic mode thus allowing adaptation to environments with chronic or intermittent sodium deficiency. We have shown recently that recurrent episodes of water deprivation, which sensitize sodium appetite, produce changes in hypothalamic transcripts of components of the renin-angiotensin system and of the receptor of apelin, a peptide that opposes the effects of angiotensin II in vasopressin secretion and arterial pressure. The Furo/Cap protocol is an up to date method used to produce quick (within two hours) sodium appetite and so it is useful to produce quick sensitization of such appetite. The objective of the present project is to find out whether there is an association between the quick sodium appetite sensitization produced by Furo/Cap and the hypothalamic gene transcription of apelin receptor and components of the renin-angiotensin system. The results shall provide basic framework for future more detailed questions about the function of hypothalamic transcriptome on the sodium appetite sensitization. (AU)
