Abstract

Over the last decades, the market and consumption of organic products has increased in consequence of the demand for healthy food and without chemical residues. However, organic farming practices such as the use of animal manure and inadequate methods of composting can increase the risk of contamination by enteric pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, the knowledge of organic farming practices is useful to understand the production system, identify problems and propose control measures that promote the quality and safety of these products. The aim of this study is to collect information on the practices employed during the production of organic leafy vegetables and evaluate the microbiological quality of samples produced in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This project will be developed in the framework of the Food Research Center (FoR / FAPESP / CEPID 2013 / 07914-8) and enhance the postdoctoral project of Dr. Daniele Fernanda Maffei (FAPESP 2016 / 09601-5).
