Abstract

Cortisol is a glucocorticoid hormone that is associated with several important physiologic processes, including inflammation, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, and fat metabolism. In addition, it is associated with acute stress; for example, emotional stress leads to cortisol release, which in turn facilitates the function of adrenaline and other catecholamines. Cortisol has been described as a potential index for stress, particularly for acute mental stressors. In this proposal we will develop a chemical sensor modified with molecurly imprinted polymers for detection of cortisol, a glucocorticoid hormone aiming at the fabrication of a wearable device to measure this hormone in real time in biological fluids. Molecularly imprinted polymers are materials with nanoscale features that imitate antibodies and other natural structures, like enzimes. (AU)
