Abstract

Currently, studies about Brazilian coalitions concern the analysis of their functioning and behavior, as well as their possible issues related to the formation of coalitions in our multiparty presidentialism - in comparison to parliamentary systems. This project seeks to introduce a new perspective to the studies about coalitions in the Brazilian political system, which comprises: the analysis of strategies employed to dissolve it. Which aspects and characteristics of political dynamics influence a party to leave the government? In other words: which aspects and characteristics of this dynamic determine that a party rationally consider that not being part of the government will not imply diminishing the possibility of realizing public policies and/or raising costs? Once observed and described the functioning of coalitions following the existent bibliography, I intend to observe empirically the behavior of political parties: whether there are indications - and which are they - that coalitions in the Brazilian presidential government malfunctioned before their end.
