Abstract

Osteoporosis and it main consequence, the fracture is a worldwide health public problem. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is currently the most accepted method for the clinical diagnosis and assessment of fracture risk. However, this technology has limitations, thus, there is a need to study other methods for assess bone quality.Bone parameters obtained by high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) together finite element analysis (FE) that computationally predicts bone strength, is increasingly used to assess bone quality, fracture risk, and anti-fracture interventions. Trabecular bone score (TBS) derived from lumbar spine DXA images is a gray-level textural index of bone microarchitecture that predict fracture risk independent of BMD. The aim of this study is to assess the bone strength by FAIM finite element (Bone Imaging Laboratory - Numerics88 Solutions Ltd.) obtained from distal radius and tibia with HR-pQCT, and correlate with TBS derived from lumbar spine in healthy individuals, to improve the prediction of fractures. A total of 300 Brazilian participants aged 60 years and older will be including. To assess bone strength, we will use FAIM finite element (spin-off product from the Bone Imaging Laboratory - Numerics88 Solutions Ltd.) which will be measured from the analysis previously obtained with a HR-pQCT system (XtremeCT, Scanco Medical AG, Brüttisellen, Switzerland). The software for TBS calculation is TBS iNsight® Version 2.1 (Med-Imaps, Bordeaux, France) analyzed by the means of DXA images of the lumbar spine.
