Abstract Due to the high prevalence of dental erosion found in recent years, new therapies have been studied to prevent or inhibit this condition. The aim of this study is to evaluate in situ different alternatives for dental erosion prevention. The specifically topics assessed are: the effect of different types of oil emulsions alone or oil-containing fluoride mouthrinse on erosive tooth wear (subprojects I and II); the protective potential of a aspartame mouthrinse on erosive toothwear (subproject III) and the effectiveness of a dentifrice containing calcium silicate, phosphate and fluoride on erosive tooth wear, considering episodes of erosion and abrasion (subproject IV). For the subproject I, a volunteer will use the palatal device during 2 hours to form the acquired pellicle and then enamel blocks will be treated in vitro with oil emulsions at two different concentrations (5 or 50%) prior to immersion in 0.5% citric acid pH 2.5 for 2 minutes. For subprojects II, III and IV, a pilot study will be carried out to define the number of volunteers needed. In subproject II, the oil emulsion with the best protective potential will be applied alone or added in a fluoride mouthrinse prior to acid challenge (4x per day for 7 days). In subproject III volunteers will use a aspartame mouthrinse prior to acid challenge (4 times per day for 7 days). In subproject IV, the dentifrice containing calcium silicate, phosphate and fluoride will be applied twice-daily (morning and evening) on one side of the appliance and on the other side brushed with the dentifrice, then subjected to acid challenge (4x per day for 7 days) All the subprojects will have negative (water) and positive (stannous fluoride as solution or dentifrice) control. In the subproject I, surface hardness will be measured and in subprojects II, III and IV the profilometry analysis will be done. Statistical analysis of the subprojects will be done adopting significance level of 5%. | |
