Abstract

This study aims to clinically compare the effectiveness of the following in-office treatments for dentine hypersensitivity (DH): Er,Cr:YSGG laser (0.5W, 20Hz, tip Z6, 0% air, 0% water), a prophylactic in-office paste Nupro Sensodyne (15% calico sodium phosphosilicate) and a control group (placebo, in which the application of a product will be simulated) immediately after treatments and, one and four weeks (s) of the application through a clinical, parallel, randomized, double-blind, interventional study. Recruitment of the volunteers will be based on their self-reported complain of dentin hypersensivity, which will be confirmed with the use of a cold air blast from a triple syringe. Then, he/she will have to show in the VAS scale (which varies from 0=no pain to 10=the worst pain possible) the value that best describes the pain sensation. The subjects that present at least one tooth with a value of 4 and above in the VAS scale (if more than one hypersensitive tooth was present, the mean VAS values obtained will be used, for each patient) will be randomly allocated into the experimental groups. The in-office treatments will be performed, according with the manufacturer´s instructions, for one trained researcher, which will be blind to the treatments. DH evaluation will be performed 5 min after the application of the treatments, by a different researcher, which will be also blind to the treatment, and which will use the same methodology described early for the detection of initial pain. The volunteers will be recalled for the DH evaluation after one and four weeks of the treatments. Data will be analyzed with the appropriate statistical methods (±=0.05). (AU)
