Effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser associated to fluoride application in the control of dentin erosion

Abstract

This study will evaluate the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser, associated to fluoride application, in the control of dentin erosion. Bovine incisors will be used in this study, from which 4mm x 4mm x 2mm dentin slabs will be sectioned from their roots. The slabs will be embedded in acrylic resin, flattened and polished. A tape will be then placed on the polished surface of the specimens, leaving a 4mm x 1mm central area exposed to subsequent testing. Half of the specimens will be previously eroded (10min immersion in 1% citric acid solution, pH~2.4) and half would be kept sound. The sound and eroded specimens (n=10 each substrate) will be randomly allocated into the experimental groups, according to the following surface treatments: 1. Negative control (no treatment); 2. APF gel (1,23% F, pH 3.6-3.9); 3. Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation (parameter 1: 0.25W, 20Hz, 2.8J/cm2); 4. Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation (parameter 2: 0.50W, 20Hz, 5.7 J/cm2); 5. APF gel + Er,Cr:YSGG laser parameter 1 +; 6. APF gel + Er,Cr:YSGG laser parameter 2. After treatments, the specimens will undergo an erosion-remineralization cycling, consisting of 5min immersion in 0.3% citric acid, followed by 60min exposure to artificial saliva. This procedure will be repeated 4 times a day, for 5 days. At the end of cycling, the tapes will be removed, and dentin surface loss (in µm) will be determined with an optical profilometer. Data will be statistically analyzed, considering a significance level of 5%. (AU)
