Abstract

Several studies have suggested brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as a key protein in adaptive responses of the nervous and immune system, metabolic and heart rate regulation. BDNF is a member of neurotrophin family of growth factors and it is present in two isoforms: pro-BDNF, with apoptotic character, and mature BDNF related to cell survival, and then a better neuronal function, as cognition and mood. In pregnancy BDNF seems to play a fundamental role in follicular development, implantation, placentation within reproductive tissues. However, across the pregnancy, BDNF concentration usually decreases and it could be related with depressive symptoms. Physical exercise is an important non-pharmacological strategy to improve BDNF level and then, improve neuronal function. In exercise, BDNF increasing is dependent of several metabolic response as well as by temperature. The blood-brain barrier, for example, has its permeability increased in the heat, allowing a higher BDNF levels output from brain. Thus, performing exercise in heat environment could be an interesting strategy to optimize BDNF levels in pregnant women. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify if heat environment during exercise can influence BDNF release in pregnant women. Our hypothesis is that exercising in heat environment can increase BDNF levels. (AU)
