Abstract

The identification of substances with biological activity in natural extracts or synthetic collections is a crucial step in the search for new drugs and requires the use of fast and efficient techniques of separation and screening. This fact encourages the development of new methods that facilitate and reduce the time spent on identifying such substances. The isolation of active principles derived from a natural extract can rarely be achieved in one step, thus strategies that integrate screening, separation and characterization are presented as promising tools in the search for new bioactive compounds. Thus, this project proposes the use of ligand fishing technique for the screening of plant extracts in search of bioactive compounds to human cholinesterases, coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and detection by high-resolution mass spectrometry. The species investigated in this work are plants of the Brazilian cerrado, selected based on ethnobotanical and chemotaxonomic knowledge. (AU)
