Maternal emotional health and development of term and preterm infants at three and nine months of age

Abstract

The gestation and postpartum period is marked by innumerable changes in the woman's life and there is a need for adaptations to these new demands. Premature birth of the baby requires even more adaptations. This study aims to investigate the indicators of maternal emotional health and the conditions of birth, premature and full term, in children's development at three and nine months of age. The sample will include 50 mothers and their babies, 25 full-term babies and 25 babies born prematurely, who attend the project "Follow-up of Infant Development: evaluation and orientation to parents" that takes place at the Center for Applied Psychology, UNESP, and the SORRI-Bauru Early Stimulation Service. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the Parental Stress-Short Form Index (ISP-FC) and the Trait-State Anxiety Inventory (IDATE) will be used to assess maternal emotional health. The Bayley Child Development Scale (third edition) (EBDI-III) will be used to assess child development. Mothers and their preterm infants will make up the G1 and full-term mothers and babies, the G2. At three and nine months of age the baby's dyad will go through assessment, the babies regarding their development and the mothers regarding their emotional health. After the evaluations will be made descriptive, comparative and correlational statistical analyzes between and intra groups. The information from this study can indicate whether and how maternal variables of maternal emotional health and birth influence infant development in the first year of life, allowing the application of protective actions to modify and reduce their negative impact on development.
