Abstract Currently, many studies related to the treatment of heavy metal effluents are being developed, especially those that allow the use of lignocellulosic residues as adsorbents. Thus, during the development of the present project, initially, will be synthesized and characterized the ionic liquids from lactic acid and the amines (sec-butylamine and tert-butylamine). The characterizations of the same will be carried out by RMNH1, RMNC13 and FTIR-ATR. After this step, the carboxymethylcellulose will be obtained from the corn straw. For this, it will undergo a pulping process in basic medium (9% soda solution for 6 h), bleaching with peroxide (5% hydrogen peroxide solution for 5 h, pH 12, 40ºC) and obtaining the carboxymethylcellulose using monochloroacetic acid. However, carboxymethylcellulose has high solubility in water. Thus, it will undergo a process of reaction with the chitosan to obtain the adsorbent. Once the desired adsorbent is obtained, it will be characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and differential exploratory calorimetry, and subsequently submitted to the activation process with the ionic liquids synthesized in order to check the influence of the aminic chain branching in the activation process and the subsequent adsorption of chromium. After the activation of the carboxymethylcellulose, chromium adsorption experiments will be performed using a potassium dichromate solution 400 mg/L to verify the effectiveness of each adsorbent. Also studies will be conducted to determine the optimum pH for adsorption, the ideal temperature, the maximum chromium concentration adsorbed per gram of adsorbent and also the best time. Studies on the reaction time will be used to determine the reaction kinetics and the data relating to variation the chromium concentration at different temperatures are used to obtain the adsorption isotherms, and therefore, will determine the adsorbent's efficiency.
