Abstract

Emerging viruses, mainly those transmitted by arthropods widely spread in urban areas, are a great concern for public health worldwide. Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging virus in Brazil often associated with fever-rash illness and some serious complications, such as a Guillain-Barré like syndrome and congenital malformations, including microcephaly. Oropouche virus (OROV) is another emerging virus with epidemic potential for Brazilian population. This agent is associated with febrile illness and meningoencephalitis in the Amazon. However, the pathogenetic aspects associated with neuropathogenesis of both viruses are not completely understood. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the role of B and T cells during neuropathogenesis of ZIKV and OROV. Therefore, we will determine the morbidity and mortality of mice without mature B and/or T cells after OROV and ZIKV infection. We will also characterize the viral replication, tissue histopathology, blood chemistry and cytokine production in the peripheral blood after viral infection. (AU)
