Abstract

This research project will study severe storms occurred in the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (SP) during the SOS-CHUVA experiment, focusing on electrification of these storms and its relation to hail and graupel formation. Using data from a X band dual-polarization radar, three lightning detection networks and a hail detection network, the observational component of this research consists of selecting and analyzing severe storms classifying their hydrometeors and relating it to lightning discharges occurred along their life cycle. Another component of this research is to use WRF-ARW model with different parametrizations of microphysics and electrification to determine how hail parametrizations affect the model electrification. It is expected that the results found here could be used in future implementations of nowcasting algorithms and operational numerical weather prediction models. (AU)
