Abstract

The aim of this study is compare the use of alternative methods (purine bases and odd-chain fatty acid AGCI) to 15N, as microbial markers to quantify the flow and microbial protein synthesis (PMic) in Nellore cattle feedlot, receiving high grain diets with different levels and sources of protein. Five Nellore cattle cannulated in rumen and duodenum (average body weight 360 kg and average age 18 months) will be used in a 5 × 5 Latin square balanced for residual effects, receiving diets with 80% concentrate and arranged in the following treatments: 1) Conventional diet (control) - 13% crude protein (CP): corn, citrus pulp, soybean meal, urea; 2) Corn gluten 60 - 10% CP: corn, citrus pulp and corn gluten 60; 3) Cotton meal - 10% CP: corn, citrus pulp and cotton meal; 4) dry distillers grain (DDG) - 10% CP: corn, citrus pulp and DDG; 5) Urea - 10% CP: corn, citrus pulp, soybean meal and urea. The efficiency of PMic synthesis will be evaluate by the different methods tested in the bases: total digestible nutrients (TDN), true organic matter fermented in the rumen (OMFR) and total carbohydrates fermented in the rumen, as well as ruminal flow of PMic by the different microbial markers and the interaction between dietary factors with the flow and efficiency of microbial synthesis quantified by different microbial markers. In this way, the project aims to contribute to the knowledge of alternative markers for the estimation of flow and microbial protein synthesis in beef cattle receiving high grain diets. (AU)
