Abstract

As a result of the increase in the costs of foods commonly used in ruminant diets in intensive production systems, the propose that studies should be carried out aiming at alternatives of lower value without compromising animal performance. One option that stands out is the waste generated as a result of the production of ethanol from corn, called distillery grains. These are extensively used in the United States, mainly as a protein source, since the late nineteenth century because of the vast production of ethanol from corn; However, studies of this co-product for ruminants in Brazil are recent, because the highest production of ethanol is from sugarcane. However, the plants present a strong potential of corn ethanol production during their idleness in the off season. In view of the above, the objective of the present study is to evaluate the effects of different levels of wet distillery grains or more commonly known as WDG, which is called Wet Distillers Grain, on dry matter intake (CMS), ruminal parameters and total digestibility of Nelore cattle diets supplemented with high concentrate diets. Eight male Nellore cattle, cannulated in the rumen and with an average initial body weight of 350 Kg of BW. , randomly allocated to individual pens will be used, and will be submitted to a statistical design 4x4 Latin square in duplicate. The treatments will differ according to the inclusion levels of WDG: T1: 0%; T2: 15%; T3: 30% and T4: 45% of inclusion DM, being supplemented by ground corn, soybean meal, minerals and tyfton 85 hay. The experimental period will last 84 d, subdivided into 4 periods of 21 d, being 14 d of adaptation and the last 7 d destined to the evaluations of CMS, total digestibility, measurement of rumen pH, concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3), ruminal gas production, and the synthesis of microbial protein. The data analysis will be by orthogonal contrasts by the PROC MIXED procedure of the statistical software SAS (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). (AU)
