Abstract

The rubber tree, plant that has great economic importance for being the largest source of natural rubber. Rubber serves as raw material for a large number of products, including about 50,000 products, including 400 medical and hospital products. Possessing features that are hardly achieved by artificial polymers, many products require natural rubber in their composition, such as high-strength tires and medical materials such as procedure gloves. The existence of leaf disease caused by the fungus Microcyclos ulei limits the production of rubber. Control of this disease can be accomplished through escape area plantings (without problems with foliar diseases), in which the selection of cold-resistant and highly productive clones becomes necessary or the selection of disease-resistant clones to be planted in affected regions. The use of molecular biology techniques can result in a decrease in the long cycle of breeding of the species, which can reach up to 30 years. In this context, the molecular markers SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) appear which may support genetic improvement programs of rubber trees. The use of a technique, known as genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), allows the detection of large SNP markers and, through this data, it is possible to obtain genetic maps of high resolution. Genetic or binding maps may aid in the discovery of chromosomal regions that control characters with a continuous pattern of phenotypic variation, known as QTLs (Quantitative Trait Loci). In addition, due to their natural resistance to M. ulei, two species of the genus Hevea, H. benthamiana and H. pauciflora are of great importance in the genetic improvement of rubber trees. Due to the lack of genetic-genomic information about these species, the study of their transcriptomes is of vital importance for the knowledge of the potential for their use in breeding in order to obtain resistance to the fungus Microcyclus ulei. The present project aims, in two different ways, to assist in the development of the heveculture, contributing with genetic and genomic knowledge to increase the resolution of the connection map for a population characteristic of escape areas, presenting one of the highly productive and the other resistant to the Cold and injury, and also by means of the evolutionary analysis of the transcriptomes of species resistant to the fungus that causes leaf disease and can help in the development of the culture in regions where the disease occurs.
