Evaluation of the effectiveness of in-office desensitizing agents in the hydraulic condutance of dentin

Abstract

Currently, several desensitizing materials are being introduced in the market, however, there is no consensus on which of those material would be more effective against dentin hypersensitivity (DH). Therefore, the objective of the present study is to compare the ability of the following in-office treatments to reduce dentin permeability: ClinproTM White Varnish, ClinproTM XT Varnish, TeethmateTM Desensitizer, Duraphat@, Desensibilize KF 2%, Desensibilize KF 2% + Clearfil SE Bond and a control group (without treatment) immediately after application and after an erosion-abrasion cycling. One-millimeter-thick specimens of dentin, obtained of the crowns from human molars, will be used (n=10). To simulate hypersensitive dentin, they will be immersed into 17% EDTA solution (pH 7.4) for 5 min. Then, they will be submitted to a 5-days erosion-remineralization cycling model, consisting of 5 min immersion in citric acid solution (0.3%, pH~2.6), followed by 60 min exposure to artificial saliva, 4 times a day. Toothrushing abrasion will be performed 2 times a day, for 15 s (with a total exposure time to the dentifrice slurry of 2 min, conventional dentifrice, 1450 ppm F, as NaF), 30 min after the first and last erosive challenges. Dentin permeability will be evaluated with hydraulic conductance after: EDTA application (maximum permeability), treatments and cycling. The permeability percent, in relation to the maximum permeability (%Lp), will be calculated for each group, in the experimental times treatment and cycling, and the data will be evaluated with the most appropriated statistical method (±=0.05).
