Abstract

Previous research conducted in the Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) has demonstrated that forest and pasture soils have different potentials for nitrous oxide emission, enhanced by soil moisture (FAPESP project 2017/02635-4). These findings reinforce the need for a deeper understanding on how this environmental parameter modulates the microbial denitrification process. However, little is still known about the functional and taxonomic profile of the denitrifying microorganisms, and their responses to the most important driver of nitrous oxide flux in tropical soils: moisture. Therefore, we propose to use an integrated approach to characterize the microbial communities that respond to changes in land use and moisture in soils of the Eastern Amazon. This objective will be achieved through (1) determine the effect of land-use change and moisture on the functional and taxonomic profile of the microbial communities involved in the denitrification in soils undergoing forest-to-pasture conversion, and (2) bioinformatics and statistical analysis of data previously obtained in the experiments in Brazil. This proposal is a collaboration with the Soil EcoGenomics Laboratory at the University of California - Davis (USA), under the joint supervision of Prof. Dr. Tsai Siu Mui and Prof. Dr. Jorge L. M. Rodrigues. (AU)
