Abstract

This research internship abroad will be developed at Cardiff University - Department of Geography and Planning - under orientation of Prof. Dr. Antonio Ioris in the background of the ongoing Masters Program and supported by FAPESP, entitled "Analysis of the economic impact of the sugar-energy sector's territorialisation and its consequences to the social development in the micro-region of São José do Rio Preto: case studies of José Bonifácio, Planalto and Ubarana municipalities", which aims, from the reference to social development, to analyze the main economic and social impacts generated by the sugar-energy sector's territorialisation with the installation of industrial plants and the large increase of the area planted with sugar cane in the micro-region of São José do Rio Preto, specifically in the municipalities of José Bonifácio, Planalto and Ubanara; if this alterations reflected somehow in social development and then, to analyze the characteristics, measures and qualities of this development, emphasizing the theoretical establishments of the concept of development in order to try to contribute to a critical perspective of the concept. This research internship abroad proposal will contribute to the Masters research, especially regarding the development's conceptual bases, allowing the postgraduate to get in touch with bibliographies, researchers and research groups with approaches different from the ones he is already in touch with in Brazil. Regardless if the concept of development is the main subject, the intern will also explore other auxiliary concepts in the research, such as territory, the agrarian question, themes as the agrofuels and the actions taken by foreign companies in the sector.
