Abstract

Thyroid hormones exert several roles on vertebrate homeostasis, acting in many physiological processes, such as growth regulation, behavior, stress and also in the reproductive system. In mammals, the role of thyroid hormone (T3) in reproduction has been well established, however, when regarding fish endocrinology the effects of this hormone on fish reproduction specifically on spermatogenesis are still unknown. In this context, recent studies have shown that T3 enhanced the action of gonadotropin (Fsh), a potent steroidogenic hormone in fish. Therefore, the current research aims to elucidate the effects the hypothyroidism effects on fish testis function and also unveil the role between T3 and Fsh. For this purpose, fish will be exposed to methimazole (1 mM), a compound that blocks thyroid hormone production, for 21 days. After exposure, testis will be collected for morphological, morphometrical, steroid release, gene expression and apoptosis analysis. Moreover, testis will be in vitro cultivated with Fsh in the presence or absence of T3 and subjected to same analysis. At the end, this research will provide support for a better understanding of the endocrine and molecular control involved in fish spermatogenesis. (AU)
