Abstract

Lignin can be obtained as a by-product of cellulosic ethanol production, and is a potential source of renewable chemicals. Efficient valorization of lignin is a major unsolved problem in the development of sustainable biorefineries. The proposal builds upon an existing BBSRC/FAPESP FAPPA partnership award, and brings together expertise from researches from Brazil and UK in cellulosic ethanol production , in biocatalyst discovery with expertise in biocatalytic lignin valorization, as well as, biocatalysis for high value chemicals production . The overall aim is to generate new methods for lignin valorization via intermediate ferulic acid. This pos-doc project will be involved the following work packages of the thematic original project: 1) Integration between lignin valorization and cellulosic bioethanol production; 2) conversion of lignin to ferulic acid from lignin using synthetic biology.
