Abstract

Relapses and rehospitalizations may leads to a worse prognosis in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) and affect their quality of life and his or her family. Relapses are defined as the exacerbation of psychotic symptoms involving hospitalization or new contact with health services. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the related factors to relapse in FEP patients. Prospective exploratory study to be developed with follow-up patients in a FEP outpatient clinic of a university hospital and their relatives. Data will be collected through interviews with patients and their families, application of eight instruments and monthly evaluation of the occurrence of relapses during the six-month period after the initial interview. It is expected that knowledge of the related factors to relapse in patients in the FEP may provide important information for health professionals, especially the nursing team, to implement strategies aimed to relapse prevention and health promotion for patients in the initial phase of the psychosis and their relatives.
