Abstract

The growing concern about environmental issues and the increased number of searches for sustainable materials makes natural fibers gain more space in research and development of new materials as raw materials to replace petroleum-based polymers. Considering that Brazil produces, annually, tons of residues that comes from the production of orange juice, this project has the objective of using the bagasse of the orange, followed by chemical treatments to obtain the bleached pulp and, later, the preparation of cellulose nanofibers. The pear orange bagasse will be subjected to the treatment of soluble residues in ethyl alcohol (SRA), followed by bleaching in sodium hydroxide solution (4% w/v) and hydrogen peroxide (30% v/v), followed of a treatment with KOH (5% w/v). After these treatments, from the bleached cellulose, nanocelluloses will be prepared through acid hydrolysis using sulfuric acid in concentrations of 64% and 50% and in different reaction times of 1 and 2h. The fiber in natura, the fiber after removal of solid waste in alcohol, after the first and second bleaching will be characterized by: X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and Microscopy Scanning Electronics (SEM). The prepared nanofibers will be characterized by the technique of zeta potential analysis and particle size analysis and also by XRD, TG/DTG and FTIR. (AU)
