Abstract

Orange is widely used in Brazil mainly in the processing of juice, which generates between 40-60% of residues, which are subsequently used in the production of by-products. The orange peel is composed of flavedo (colored portion) and albedo (white and spongy portion). Lignocellulosic fibers are being increasingly used invarious applications due to their advantages when compared to synthetic fibers. The fact that they consume less energy results in lower emissions of gases in the atmosphere, are low cost, biodegradable, have ease of handling for surface treatment and can be easily modified when necessary. The life cycle analysis of products based on natural fibers shows an extremely favorable environmental balance. Another factor of great relevance is the diversity of natural fibers existing on our planet. Lignocellulosic residues can be derived from stalk, roots, leaves and fruits of the plants generating large quantities which has aroused great interest, when chemically treated can be separated into their isolated components such as cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin and lignin. These separate components can be used in various applications, such as nano cellulose preparation, nanolignin, reinforcement in polymer matrices, bionanocomposite films and others. The present work has the objective to use bagasse from the production of orange juice, to obtain bleached pulp. In order to obtain the bleached cellulose, the amorphous macromolecular components of this fiber will be separated by chemical treatments using acetic acid which allows the separation of the lignin and the crude cellulose pulp which will be bleached with a mixture of NaOH / H2O2.
