Abstract

Introduction: Although alcohol use among college students is associated with several health and academic problems, there is a lack of interventions on alcohol for this population. Internet-based Personalized Normative Feedback (PNF) shows positive effects on alcohol use among college students. However, studies on PNF mediators and moderators are scarce. These studies help in understanding the mechanism of change and conditions in which the effect occurs. Normative perceptions seem to mediate the effects of PNF, but longitudinal studies are still needed. Participants' motivation seems to mediate PNF effects, but this effect needs to be evaluated in longitudinal studies. In turn, although there are indications that motivation moderates the effects of PNF, previous studies had focused only on the receptivity of the normative feedback and not on the other elements of the intervention. Objective: To evaluate whether normative perceptions mediates and motivation to receive the intervention moderates the effects of an Internet-based PNF intervention for alcohol use among Brazilian college students. Methods: Pragmatic randomized controlled trial among college students aged 18 and over, with 3 and 6 months follow-ups assessments. Recruitment will occur through e-mail and social media. Questionnaire comprises the Daily Drinking Questionnaire, AUDIT-C, Brief Young Adult Alcohol Consequences Questionnaire, Drinking Norms Rating Form, Situational Motivation Scale and Readiness ruler. Participant´s engagement will be evaluated through log data. Statistical analyzes will consider Generalized Mixed Models and Structural Equation Models and significance level of 5%. Expected results: to identify mediation and moderation factors of PNF effectiveness, contributing to further intervention improvements and enhanced effectiveness.
