This research project deals with the theoretical analysis and computational implementation of new mathematical models that represent the Transmission Network Expansion Planning (TNEP) problem with the AC power flow equations. The proposal consists in developing new mathematical formulations based on the complex power flow equations that will be expanded in the rectangular and polar coordinates, and these models will define different solution spaces. The solution for each one of those models must be feasible for the other formulations. The models will be part of the mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems and the complexity of all the formulations will depend on the size of the power system under planning, the number of existing loops in the transmission network and the number of isolated buses belonging to the system. Those mathematical models will be implemented in the mathematical modelling language AMPL and solved using commercial mixed-integer nonlinear programming solvers. We will test the new formulations with small and medium size test systems.
