Abstract Aerosols are important agents of the global climate system for being able to significantly alter Earth's energy balance, affecting the system in time scales ranging from minutes to climate change. Some types of aerosols reflect the solar radiation, cooling the planet, while others absorb this radiation, thus warming the planet. In this sense, it is important to understand how pollution emission may alter the natural distribution of aerosols. In this project, the student will study the vertical distribution of aerosols in the central Amazon region. Data from the ceilometer operated during the GoAmazon 2014/15 at the experimental site T3-Manacapuru will be used. This experimental site, downwind of Manaus-AM, received alternately polluted air masses (from the city) and clean air masses (from the forest). The study period will be IOP1 (Feb-Mar 2014) of the GoAmazon experiment, during which there was no contribution from biomass burning. The Klett method will be applied to elastic backscatter signal measured by the ceilometer to obtain the vertical distribution of the aerosol backscatter coefficient. The vertical profiles will be grouped according to the origin of the air mass, following the available classification based on the Hysplit model. The student will perform a descriptive statistical analysis with this dataset, and will contrast the clean and polluted aerosol vertical distributions. | |
