Abstract

The main scientific and innovative challenge of the project is the development of fully absorbable and Nitric Oxide (NO) releasing intracoronary polyester stents, composed of polynitrosed polyester NO donors, pure and in blends with poly(lactic acid) and polycaprolactone. In this way, the materials to be developed will provide the stent with a complete bioabsorption property, with localized release of NO, which in turn displays antiplatelet (antithrombotic) anti-restenotic and pro-endothelial actions. The project involves the development of methodologies for the synthesis and formation of polyester blends, their casting by injection in the form of tubes, a laser machining of the tubes for the fabrication of the stent, an evaluation and modulation of the mechanical properties of hydrolytic degradation and NO release from stents, as well as their bio and hemocompatibility. We expect to obtain prototypes of expandable balloon catheter NO-releasing polymeric stents and sufficient radial strength to support coronary arteries after implantation. The project will involve collaboration with Dr. Spero Penha Morato of the Lasertools Tecnologia Ltda Company, with whom protocols for cutting the stents mesh with lasers will be developed. (AU)
