Abstract

This present study is based on a family collection information and aims the trajectory of the founder and editor of Bookstore and Publisher Duas Cidades (São Paulo, 1954-2006), the Dominican Frei Benevenuto of Santa Cruz. He was a religious leader, who resigned in 1971, and was responsible for creating the bookstore that became one of the most important cultural and intellectual centers in the city of São Paulo, as well as a space for sociability, formation and circulation of ideas (with people like Antonio Candido, Augusto de Campos, Marilena Chauí, Celso Lafer, Rogério Cerqueira Leite and José Arthur Giannotti). As publisher and during the same period, he released originals of Mário de Andrade (from the surveys of Telê Porto Ancona Lopez and Oneyda Alvarenga). Works by young poets (Francisco Alvim, José Paulo Paes, Orides Fontela, Alcides Villaça, Paulo Henriques Britto, Maria Lúcia Alvim) and intellectuals who later became references in their areas (besides Antônio Cândido and Augusto de Campos, João Luiz Lafetá, João Alexandre Barbosa, José Miguel Wisnik, Roberto Schwarz, Décio Pignatari, Gilda Rocha de Mello e Souza, Lygia Sigaud, among others).The character, while promoting the editorial plan and managing the publisher and the bookstore, established both personal and commercial relationships with the authors, representatives of significant intellectuality sectors and literature of the regarding period. The Duas Cidades collection is presented as a result of a personal project and an analysis reference of São Paulo's intellectual life during the company existence as a symbolic goods producer.
