Abstract

The increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Brazil and in the world has raised the search for therapeutic measures in order to combat it. Brown adipose tissue, rediscovered less than a decade ago, plays an important role in energy homeostasis and there is evidence that its activity is inversely associated with obesity. Few studies have evaluated the association between body composition and brown adipose tissue, and there is practically no study with this objective in the Brazilian population. The objective of the study is to investigate the association between body composition, assessed by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and brown adipose tissue activity (evaluated by PET / MRI) of obese and lean humans. This study has a cross-sectional design and it is a part of an open clinical trial lasting four weeks. Obese and lean participants are evaluated for brown adipose tissue (by FDG PET / MRI scan), body composition (DXA), dietary intake and physical activity. Data will be expressed as mean and standard deviation and the association between variables will be evaluated by correlation. Linear and logistic regression analyzes will also be performed to evaluate the association between the variables adjusting for possible confounding factors. (AU)
