Gradient productions of alveolar liquids: perceptual-auditory and ultrasonographic analysis

Abstract

The present study aims to describe the typical production and the liquid simplification processes in children, based on perceptual-auditory and ultrasonographic analysis. It is hypothesized that for liquid substitution, it would occur from the presence of two gestures in different magnitudes. For the semivocalization process, there would be the omission of tip of the tongue gesture, keeping only the dorsal gesture, and/or gestural blending (presence of a single intermediate gesture). For this, it will be collected productions (ultrasound images and respective audios) of 10 children with typical production and 20 children with speech disorders involving the simplification processes in the class of liquids. It will be requested for 20 judges to judge separately the audio and US image files corresponding to the children's productions, considering in the analysis the accuracy of the previously defined categories (e.g. typical vs atypical), as well as the reaction time during decision-making at trial. In adition, we will make a quatitative analysis of the ultrasound data. It is expected contributions to explain such simplification processes, to point out the best manner of analyzing the gradient productions involving the liquid ones and to confirm (or not) their articulatory complexity.
