Abstract

OSSB (Oriented Structural Straw Board) was developed at the end of the 20th century; however, their large-scale production only began in 2009 in China. The raw material used in the production is wheat straw and polymeric isocyanate (pMDI) and the application of this composite has been in construction as a structural element in the manufacture of floors and furniture. The main concept behind the technology is the use of agricultural waste and adhesive that does not release formaldehyde into the environment, since these boards have been used in the construction and furniture of hospitals and day care centers. In Brazil, an alternative source of raw material for the manufacture of this composite is soybean straw, as the country is the second largest producer of this grain in the world, and adhesive from vegetable source, such as castor oil. Thus, the development of a product that uses national raw materials would bring another source of income to rural producers, in addition to providing another composite product option that has had good receptivity within international market, besides adding value to a waste discarded today. Therefore it is intended to produce OSSB with soybean straw and castor oil and to evaluate its physical and mechanical properties according to international normative documents, aiming applications in construction and furniture industry.
