Abstract

The integrity of the adhesive interface is fundamental to ensure the longevity of composite resin restorations and the search for ways to preserve it is still a challenge for Dentistry. The hydrolysis of collagen fibrils at the dentin-restoration interface by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) has been considered a major cause of the decrease in bond strength between the resin and the tooth. Therefore, the conservation of the structural integrity of the collagen, making it more resistant to hydrolysis by MMPs, may contribute to increase the longevity of composite resin restorations. Proanthocyanidin (PA), a collagen cross-linker agent widely found among plants, has been recognized by its ability to increase the resistance of collagen fibrils and to inhibit the activity of MMPs. However, the literature lacks conclusive studies regarding methods of PA incorporation into a restorative protocol in an effective manner and without compromising clinical time. In this context, the aim of the present study is to evaluate, by means of microtensile test (n=6) and scanning electron microscopy (n=3), the bond strength between dentin and composite resin restoration 24 hours after the treatment of the dentin surface, according to the groups: 1) self-etch system - control, 2) total-etch system 35% phosphoric acid - control, G3) 35% phosphoric acid - experimental; G4) PA incorporated into 35% phosphoric acid - experimental.
