Two times weekly multicomponent training sessions is sufficient to maintain functional capacity to older adults?

Abstract

The aging results in changes from the public health and country's economy. Thus, it is important to study themes about promoting healthy aging in Brazil. Although several studies showed the importance and benefits of physical activity for functional capacity and healthy aging, some intervention programs are unable to offer physical activity in the frequency recommended by the main guidelines. In this context, this study aims to compare the effects of a multicomponent exercise protocol at two- and three-times-weekly on the functional capacity of active community older adults. Sixty-six active older adults will be evaluated, divided into two groups: the group will perform the intervention two times a week (G2, n = 33) and the group that will perform the intervention three times a week (G3, n = 33). The intervention protocol will consist of 12 months of multi-component training, following ACSM recommendations. The functional capacity will be evaluated in three moments (m1= initial, m2= after six months of training, m3= after one year of training) by the instruments: 6-minute walk test (6MWT), hand grip, flexibility with Wells Bank, Static Unipodal Balance Test, and Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). For statistical analysis, the Komolgorov-Smirnov test will be used to verify the normality of the data. To compare the clinical and anthropometric data in the baseline, the independent t-test or Mann-Whitney test will be used according to the normality of the data. The effect of training on the functional capacity between moments and groups will be evaluated by ANOVA two-way with repeated measures. In all analyzes a p d 0.05 will be adopted. (AU)
