Abstract

To evaluate the effect of the combination of self-management strategies (SMS) and multicomponent training (MT) on the pattern of sedentary behavior (SB) and physical function in older adults after the interruption of an exercise program by the COVID-19 pandemic and to assess whether the SMS effects last for 6 months after the end of the intervention. Methods: This is a randomized, controlled clinical trial with parallel groups and blind evaluation. We will include older adult (e 60 years) participants with preserved ambulation from the outreach project "Geriatric Revitalization". We will allocate older adults into two groups: Intervention group (IG): MT combined with SMS. Control group (CG): Isolated MT. Both groups will receive the MT, lasting 16 weeks, 50min sessions, held 3 times a week. Only the IG will receive the SMS. We will evaluate the SB pattern using the ActivPAL3" micro accelerometer and physical function by the Hand Grip Strength test, 30-second Sit-to-Stand test and Timed Up-and-Go test. Assessments will be performed pre-intervention, immediately after 16 weeks of intervention and 6 months after withdrawal of SMS. We will perform the generalized mixed linear model analysis. Time, group and interaction (time x group) will be considered as fixed factors and participants will be considered as a random factor. Statistical analysis will be performed using the JAMOVI software and statistical significance will be adopt at p < 0.05 and a confidence interval of 95%. Expected results: We expect that the IG receiving the SMS will show a reduction in SB and better performance in physical function compared to the CG. We also expect that the IG will maintain the reduction in SB and the improvement in physical function 6 months after the end of the SMS. (AU)
