Abstract

The elderly population has been increasing over the years in Brazil. The permanence of the elderly sitting or lying for hours are characteristic of sedentary behavior activities, which can be an aggravating factor for several health problems and decline in the functional capacities of this population, compromising even the simplest daily activities; functional training has been used as an alternative to strength training for the elderly population, as this training is similar to activities of daily living. Objective: The objective of this project will be to analyze the effect of the practice of 12 weeks of Functional Training on the sedentary behavior of the elderly, as well as to verify the reproducibility of the questionnaire applied when compared to the direct measurement of sedentary behavior via accelerometry. Methods: The study will be carried out with 34 elderly people over 60 years old, will last for three months, with two moments of evaluation (baseline and after 3 months), and will be randomized into two groups: Functional Training (n = 17) and control (n = 17). Anthropometric measurements of weight, height and body mass index (BMI) will be evaluated. Sedentary behavior will be assessed using the Measure of Older Adults Sedentary Time (MOST) questionnaire and accelerometer. The Actigraph GT3X accelerometer will be used for 7 consecutive days, and those who used at least 10 hours / day for 4 days will be valid. The intervention will be performed three times a week on non-consecutive days, for 60 minutes. The exercises will be divided into upper, lower and global members, totaling 13 exercises per training day, organized in the form of a circuit. The control group will not carry out any type of training and should maintain its usual routine. To compare the sedentary behavior of the elderly at the time of the control group and after the intervention, the Covariance Analysis (ANCOVA) will be performed with adjustment for age, sex and socioeconomic level and BMI. The reproducibility of the questionnaire against the direct method for measuring sedentary behavior will be assessed using the Bland-Altman Plot, and intraclass correlation coefficient, by SPSS 15.0 and MedCalc 11.0 and with p-value <0.05. Expected results: It is expected that the sedentary behavior of the elderly will decrease after the intervention period.
