Oral condition and physical and nutritional status of the elderly in long-stay institutions: multicenter study

Abstract

The growth of the elderly population is due to the increase of the world life expectancy. However, active aging is uncertain, especially in elderly people living in long-term institutions. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to evaluate the oral health condition and the physical and nutritional status, as well as the masticatory efficiency of the elderly in long-stay institutions. According to a sample calculation, 500 elderly people will be selected, of which 300 will be recruited from 19 long-term institutions belonging to the city of Piracicaba-SP and 200 recruited from 6 institutions of João Pessoa-PB. The oral health condition will be evaluated by means of clinical examination to be performed by calibrated researchers (Kappa> 0.70), in order to investigate the caries experience (CPO-D index), need for treatment, use and necessity of removable prostheses, presence of oral lesions and changes in normality in soft tissues. The physical state will be evaluated through the Independence Scale in Daily Life Activities (EIAVD) and Fragility determination. The nutritional status will be evaluated through the Mini-Nutritional Assessment (MNA®) and body measurements (bone and muscle mass, metabolic age, visceral fat, body mass index and total water mass) obtained through a bioimpedance balance. The masticatory efficiency will be evaluated by visual and electronic colorimetric inspection of artificial chewable test material (two-color chewing gum). The deglutition threshold will be evaluated by the number of masticatory cycles performed by the volunteer during the chewing of 17g of peanut until the moment of swallowing. The data will be analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics, which will test hypotheses of association and / or difference, considering p <0.05 and ² <0.20. (AU)
