Abstract

Although antiretroviral therapy has improved the life expectancy of people living with HIV/AIDS, it is associated with several adverse effects such as changes in metabolic profile and in body composition, factors that contribute to the development of non-AIDS diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. Propolis, a natural product with no side effects described in the literature, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and therefore, presents great potential to bring improvements in the health of the HIV-infected people. Thus, the objective of this study is to verify if the metabolic profile of these individuals can be improved with the daily use of propolis. For this, we will perform a randomized double-blind clinical trial study, with parallel intervention for 12 weeks in 40 HIV-infected patients. The analyzed variables will be: TCD4 + cell count, TCD8 +, triglycerides, total cholesterol and fractions, as well as anthropometric evaluation by measures of weight, height, neck, waist, hip and arm circumferences; nutritional diagnosis by BMI; evaluation of body composition by multifrequency electrical bioimpedance and; evaluation of the food profile through the 24-hour dietary recall and food registry.
